In the past ten years, solder mask's role in the performance and appearance of PCBs has become extremely important. Only four materials are a permanent part of the board: laminate, copper, solder mask/legend ink, and the final metal finish.

One could say that solder mask has turned into a "beauty contest" with one subtle difference: talent (performance) and cosmetic beauty are equally important.
