Let's look at more examples of the sort of remote key changes we considered last month. Ex. 1 is from Giuliani's Grande Ouverture. Up to this point the music has been solidly in A major, and here it thins down to repeated E's (dominant), which become the mediant of C major, the chords being played in fast arpeggio patterns--the bare bones of a pivot modulation. In the first measure of Ex. 2, from my own Variations On A Catalan Folk So g, the chord is B9 (dominant of the home key).
