What would it take for you to part with an extra $175 a year? Is a community center worth it? What if it had a big pool? An indoor playground? An ice rink?

Shakopee residents will be asked May 24 to decide whether the city should borrow up to $26.35 million to expand its 75,000-square-foot community center. Paying off the bonds would cost a homeowner with a $213,000 home $175 per year for 20 years.

"I don't think we need it," said Donald Kocks, a Shakopee resident since 1953. "I just plain don't think we need a community center."
