Jul. 22--The United Mine Workers of America and a subsidiary of Zeigler Coal Holding Co. Wednesday agreed to let the union represent workers at two non-union mines.
The deal covers mines owned by SMC Mining, a Kentucky-based subsidiary of Zeigler, of Fairview Heights, Ill.
SMC employs 730 hourly workers at the Marrowbone Development Co. mine in West Virginia and the Wolf Creek Collieries Co. mine in Kentucky. SMC operates five other non-union mines.
