Nursery culture of the abalone Haliotis laevigata: larval settlement and juvenile production using cultured algae or formulated feed.

From: Journal of Shellfish Research | Date: December 15, 2004| Author: Daume, Sabine; Ryan, Stephen | Copyright information

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the settlement, growth, survival, and size variability of the abalone Haliotis laevigata on commercial scale. At settlement, two plate conditioning times for the green alga Ulvella lens (conditioned for 6 or 8 wk) were evaluated and compared with plates colonized by different diatom species (Navicula cf. jeffreyi and Cocconeis sp.). In a choice experiment an overall settlement rate of 87% was estimated 3 days after larval release. The...

Comparisons of rearing systems based on algae or formulated feed for juvenile greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata).(Report)
Journal of Shellfish Research ; ABSTRACT In most commercial abalone nurseries worldwide, algal biomass grown on vertical plates becomes inadequate once juvenile abalone reach about 5 mm in shell length. At that stage animals need to be moved into a different tank system and weaned onto a formulated feed or alternative algal diets
Embryonic velar structure and function of two sibling species of Crepidula with different modes of development.
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction In marine invertebrates, the evolution of direct development from the putative ancestral state of development with planktotrophic larvae is often accompanied by modifications of morphological structures associated with swimming and feeding (Strathmann, 1978; Hadfield and Iaea, 1989;
Northern quahog (= hard clam) Mercenaria mercenaria age at length relationships and growth patterns in the York River, Virginia 1954 to 1970.
Journal of Shellfish Research ; ABSTRACT Northern quahogs Mercenaria mercenaria were grown in trays suspended in the York River, Virginia from November 1954 (4 months old) to December 1970 (16 years old). Measurements of shell length (mm) were made at least once a year from 1954 to 1970 and measurements of shell width (mm) were
Growth rate estimation of Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) trunculus (gastropoda: muricidae) based on mark/recapture experiments in the Ria Formosa lagoon (Algarve coast, southern Portugal).
Journal of Shellfish Research ; ABSTRACT This study reports growth rates estimates for Hexaplex (Trunculariopsis) trunculus (Gastropoda: Muricidae) from mark/recapture experiments carried out in the Ria Formosa lagoon (Algarve coast, southern Portugal). A total of 726 specimens (shell length and total weight ranging between
Turtles of New York State.
New York State Conservationist ; Turtles are unmistakable in appearance, their unique double-shelled armor distinguishes them from all other vertebrates. Size specific fecundity of red abalone (Haliotis rufescens): evidence for reproductive senescence?
Journal of Shellfish Research ; ABSTRACT The fecundity of wild red abalone. Haliotis rufescens, was examined during four reproductive seasons (2000-2003) in northern California. A broad size range of abalone were sampled (n = 425) from Van Damme State Park and the Point Arena area. Sexual maturity was defined as the presence of
