April Fool's Day by Josip Novakovich. Harper Collins, 226 pp., $23.95. In this, Novakovich's first novel, we learn about Ivan Dolinar, born to Croatian parents in 1948. His life begins on April Fool's Day, but his parents record his birth date, officially, as April the second hoping to save Ivan from later ridicule. However, the tactic does not help Ivan avoid life's disasters as he gets himself into several humiliating situations.
