When it comes to Latín jazz, people tend to refer to Mongo Santamaría, Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, Mario Bauzá, Chucho Valdés and Dizzy Gillespie, but one name rarely mentioned is that of a pioneer who played with some of the greatest musicians and bandleaders in jazz and Latín music.
He was born on January 1st, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois to J.C. and Emma McKibbon, as Alfred McKibbon, two years before his family moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he was educated on his journey to becoming the first U.S. bassist to experience what would later he called Latin jazz.
