Despite the proliferation of work and research on Chartism in the last thirty years, surprisingly, there has been no comprehensive account of the role of women in the movement. There is no shortage of evidence of women's involvement in Chartism, particularly in its early stages. Most local studies of Chartism have revealed a variety of ways in which women contributed to the movement, and Dorothy Thompson in particular has drawn attention to the fact that Chartism must be seen as the last mass movement in modem British history to have involved ordinary women.
