The Haines Borough Public Library has been named "Best Small Library" of 2005 by the Library Journal and has received a $10,000 prize from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The public spirit of Haines, several local agencies and many others started a snowball effect.

USDA Rural Development previously obligated a direct loan of $225,000 and a grant for $1.1 million in September of 2001, coming from a special economic initiative. The Haines Borough then provided the land valued at $135,000 and $8,600 in cash. There was a municipal matching grant of $60,365, ...
