A new device for noninvasively measuring liver fibrosis could decrease the number of liver biopsies performed on patients with chronic hepatitis C. especially when used with other noninvasive tests.

The device, called FibroScan, might bring more patients with chronic hepatitis C to a clinic for evaluation of liver fibrosis because the procedure is painless and takes less than 5 minutes, according to two prospective studies.
