John Hanning Speke was born in Devon on 4 May 1827 to Georgina Hanning and William Speke. He served in the British Indian Army in the Punjab from 1844 and took the opportunity to travel through Tibet and the Himalaya. Despite a passion for travelling, his introduction to exploration was somewhat inadvertent. When Sir Richard Burton set out to explore Somalia in 1854, Speke was on leave from the 46th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry and contemplating a two-year shooting expedition to the Mountains of the Moon in East Africa.
