New official residence for Japan's prime minister opens.

TOKYO _ After more than 70 years as the center of Japanese politics, the prime minister's official residence has been reborn as living quarters equipped with a style that blends the old and the new.

An opening ceremony Monday was attended by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi and several of his predecessors. The old _ residence, which was used from 1929 to 2002, was renovated into one that is equipped with state-of-the-art environmental technologies, while keeping reminders of the past.
