There was something different about this animal. It seemed to be watching me intently--this was not a stray dog in the yard; it was a coyote. For years, I had been hearing the band of coyotes yipping and howling in the early evening, or calling in response to the fire siren. I knew coyotes were in my suburban Albany County town--I had even glimpsed them as they dashed across the road. But standing in my yard? This was a whole different game.
