Abstract
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-[alpha] is one of the oldest known cytokines in human physiology. It is involved in both normal and pathologic states. Virtually every cell and organ in the body are affected by TNF-[alpha]. (1) Though TNF-[alpha] is usually involved in inflammation as a normal host defense response, when overproduced, it can become pathologic and affect almost every organ system. In this article, we address the role of TNF-[alpha] in diseases such as...

Modulation of Bacterial Growth by Tumor Necrosis Factor-[alpha] In Vitro and In Vivo
American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine
; Tumor necrosis factor-[alpha] (TNF-[alpha]) plays an important role in innate immunity. Recent in vitro studies have shown that TNF-[alpha] may also serve as a growth factor for some bacteria. We examined the physiologic relevance of this phenomenon both in vitro and in vivo. Recombinant mouse

Soluble tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptors p55 and p75 interlukin-10 downregulate (TNF-alpha) activity during the lung response to silica particles in NMRI mice
American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology
; We have found reduced activity of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a accompanying resolving and fibrosing alveolitis induced in NMRI mice by mineral particles (MnO^sub 2^ and SiO^sub 2^, respectively), which is in apparent contradiction to the well-recognized proinflammatory and profibrotic activities
