What goes up must come down. That's the truest forecast you can make for ice cream sales, as last year's grim performance showed.

After a scorching summer in 2003, when replenishment was the biggest problem, last year's sales figures made truly dismal reading. By September, headline data showed take-home sales down 6.9% to 575.4m [pounds sterling] [ACNielsen] and impulse down 17.7%.

Luckily, a strong Christmas performance by the premium sector in particular helped to restore some of the sector's pride, with TNS showing take-home down just 2.3% by the year end.
