As is so often the case with medieval manuscripts rich in visual imagery, one striking miniature has largely upstaged its fellows and come to serve as the recognizable "face" of the Psalter Hours so-called of Yolande of Soissons, (1) a late-thirteenth-century luxury prayer book created in the city of Amiens for a wealthy and noble laywoman. The miniature in question is a full-page portrait of a woman, presumably the manuscript's intended owner (fol. 232v, Fig. 1).
