Las year almost 4,000 competitors descended upon Athens, Greece, for the 2004 Paralympic Games. The city invested more than $24 million in projects designed to make Athens a friendlier, more functional city for people with disabilities.

Preparations began years in advance to update and make accessible one of the world's oldest cities. This included removing mental as well as physical barriers.
