Alaska's last derby-styled crab fishery couldn't come and go without taking the lives of more Bering Sea fishermen.
Within hours of beginning the Bering Sea opilio crab fishery on Jan. 15, the Kodiak-based Big Valley, a 92-foot crabber, rolled over and sank. Seas were estimated at around 25 feet, and winds were gusting to 40 knots where the vessel was working near St. Paul Island.
