There are three references for the design of Red Cloud's painted tipi. Figure 1 is the oldest, painted on a pipe bag (photo 1) which Red Cloud or his son Jack Red Cloud presented, about 1903, to his friend James H. Cook, a rancher living in the northwest corner of Nebraska.
The painting on the pipe bag is now indistinct with age, but is of a tipi seen from the back, with Red Cloud's head and shoulders glyph above (not shown here). Superimposed across the tipi there appea...
