Philip Henslowe is famous because of his Diary, the day-by-day record of his transactions as the builder of the Rose playhouse in 1587, and its evidence for his practices as the landlord and paymaster of at least six playing companies between 1592 and his death in 1616. Those six or more companies included one in which Shakespeare probably performed, and another led by the leading actor of the time, Edward Alleyn.
