A train whistle's remote muted wall in the darkness evokes for many Mississippians reverberations of Meridian's old Union Station--the polish-worn patina of aged brass fixtures, including spittoons, smooth-worn mahogany benches with dividing armrests, red-capped porters striding through the crowd, and the station master, blue-uniformed and authoritative.
