Dr. Shalita: Blue light, a visible light of 410-420 nm, activates the porphyrins in P. acnes. They have an action spectrum at a higher wavelength too, but the peak activity is there. We found first that blue light reduces the bacteria. Since then, clinical trials around the world have shown that it is about as effective as topical antibiotics, maybe a little bit more so.
