C&D debris, tourism skew Maine solid waste figures.(News)

Maine's per capita municipal solid waste generation statistics are substantially higher than the national average, but the figures are skewed by a couple of factors, the state said.

In Maine's recently released solid waste generation and disposal capacity report, the state said each resident generated an average of 3,094 pounds of waste in 2003, or about 8.7 pounds per day.

That compares with a national average of about 4.4 pounds of solid waste per capita per day, according to the Maine Waste Management and Recycling Program.
