Hemlock woolly adelgid.(PEST OF THE MONTH)

THE HEMLOCK WOOLLY ADELGID IS THE COMMON name for Adelges tsugae, the destructive, non-native insect that feeds on the twigs of hemlock trees. This insect is responsible for the decline and death of eastern and Carolina hemlock--in urban and rural settings--from Maine to Georgia. Many, if not all, of the 274 cultivars of eastern hemlock are also at risk.

What does it look like?

The easiest way to identify hemlock woolly adelgid is to look for the white, Q-tip-like, cottony egg masses on the underside of hemlock needles in the spring. The nymph and adult ...
