The CDC changed its name to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Oct 27, 1992. Congress enacted this change with the Preventive Health Amendments of 1992. The new name will reflect the CDC's efforts in preventing disease, disability and injury. The CDC will retain its old acronym because it has high recognition among the public and the public-health community.
