5 The shallowest of the Great Lakes (the mean depth is only 19 metres), Lake Erie used to be infamous as the most polluted one as well. In the 1960s, it was declared "dead." Lake Erie's main supply of water comes from the St. Clair River. The water in the St. Clair River passes by Detroit and Sarnia (Canada's chemical capital) so it got whatever those two cities threw into it as the water passed. On the American shore, the industrial cities of Toledo, Cleveland, Erie, and Buffalo contributed their waste.
