Feb. 24--Going abroad to study in foreign universities is no longer a prerogative for elite and the brilliant. Now, mediocre students are making up a sizeable chunk of the candidates who are applying for courses in foreign universities.

According to Susan Shultz, director of the American Centre in Kolkata, the number of student visas granted in the eastern zone in 2004 was 1277, which is almost a 10 per cent rise over last year's figures.
