Two she-condors dominated my pass into literary adulthood in the mid-1960s - one of them was Lillian Hellman, the other Mary McCarthy. McCarthy's The Group hit the best-seller lists soon after it was published in August 1963 and remained on them for nearly two years; by the time I was composing my college application essay to Vassar in the fall of 1964, I had read the bits about the famous pessary several times and was lubricating my prose style (I thought) with plenty of killing derivatives from McCarthy's tube (if not her pen).
