The consumption of chaparral contributed to two cases of acute toxic hepatitis in 1992, one in California and the other in Texas. One case involved 42-year-old man who ingested three 500-milligram capsules of chaparral a day during a six-week period. The other case involved a 41-year-old woman who took about 150 tablets of chaparral over the course of 11 weeks. Public-health workers need to be aware of the adverse effects of certain nutritional supplements.
