Buddhists believe people linger for 49 days after death.

"At the 49th day, they have an opportunity to move on. The chanting is an opportunity to say thank you and offer support," said Entsu Scott Rosecrans, a monk at the Zen Center of Syracuse.

Today, local practitioners of Zen Buddhism invite people to a retreat and meditation in honor of those killed in the Dec.26 Asian tsunami.
