One computer capability which is often overlooked is data storage and retrieval. It is the principal capability used by the computer program we call databases.

This month, we will examine the Phase Diagrams for Ceramists database, which was assembled in a joint effort between NIST and The American Ceramic Society. However, before we look specifically at the phase diagram effort, let's examine databases in general.
