AT LAST--a mainline minister has ad the courage to address the question of heaven in a balanced and reasoned way ("Reclaiming Heaven," Dec. 14).

It has puzzled me for some time that ministers so often seem ill at ease when the subject of heaven arises. As Mark Ralls points out, mainline clergy "have assumed for too long that when it comes to heaven, silence is the only viable option." My own experience has been that, at best, ministers mumble when the subject of heaven comes up.

I suspect that, in fact, most mainline ministers, like most of their parishioners, don't ...
