AN END to four years of Middle East bloodshed that has claimed the lives of more than 4,000 people was formally declared yesterday.

The historic ceasefire was sealed by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

It was the highest level meeting between the warring sides since violence erupted in 2000.

However, hope has been dashed so often before in the Middle East, it must be tempered by realism.
