Feb. 8--There are fewer domestic elk breeders in North America than there was a decade ago.

The number of farmers in the United States and Canada has dropped from a peak of more than 2,000 in the mid- 1990s to about 1,800, says Ted Winters, president of the North American Elk Breeders Association. Membership in the association has dropped dramatically from about 1,800 to 700 as ranchers have tried to find ways to save money, he says.
