MOST OF THE ESSAYS gathered here are elaborated from presentations delivered at the 2002 annual convention of the Modern Language Association. With the dual sponsorship of the Division of Literature of the English Renaissance, Excluding Shakespeare, and the Division of 17th-Century English Literature, three panels were organized to address the general question, "When is a public sphere?"
