When Julius Caesar and Cleopatra arrived in Rome in 45 B.C., they found the empire's calendar system in complete disarray. Determined by the phases of the moon (and the whims of politicians), the Roman calendar was so off that the vernal equinox fell during winter! With the help of Cleopatra's Egyptian astrologer, Sosigenes, Caesar devised a new system with a 365-day year and an additional "leap day" every four years to make up for the time that would be lost annually in a 365-day year. Today, we call this system the Julian calendar.
