In a communication arts class last week at Edgewood College here in Madison, I greeted a new class of primarily first-year students. We bantered about many things. At one point I used the word "stewardess." One student jokingly updated me: "It's 'flight attendant' now."

That's when I said: "Oooops! I'm giving my age away. Next thing you know I'll be quoting Johnny Carson instead of Jay Leno!" Turns out half the class had never even heard of Johnny Carson.
