PERSONS WITH alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence conditions use medical care at higher rates than the general population, and a number of studies suggest that treatment may reduce excess use (Goodman et al., 1991; Holder, 1987, 1998; Holder and Blose, 1986; Holder et al., 1992; Parthasarathy et al., 2001; Reiff et al., 1981).
