Wyndham Lewis achieved prominence both as an artist and a writer. He was born in Nova Scotia of British and American parents, moved to England as a child, and then studied at the Slade School of Art in London. From 1902 to 1908 he traveled in Europe studying art at the major museums. By 1913 he had become associated with Roger Fry and the Omega Workshops, but after a falling out with Fry he formed the rival, although failed, Rebel Art Centre, The style of art that grew out of it was called vorticism, which can be considered an offshoot of both cubism and futurism.
