The future of Van Duyn Home & Hospital is in jeopardy as the nursing home faces a crippling financial crisis with no apparent relief in sight.

The county-owned nursing home has been hemorrhaging money since 2002, when it lost $2.3 million. It has lost money each year since, and officials project a $7.9 million deficit this year and a nearly $10 million shortfall in 2006.

Adding to the crisis, the nursing home's reserves will be gone by year's end, meaning county taxpayers may be forced to start subsidizing Van Duyn next year.
