Months before Wolfe set foot on the Plains of Abraham, the battle for Quebec was won. It was won by the Royal Navy and Admiral Charles Saunders, a bulky man with fierce, baggy eyes and a great square nose who said little and carried out orders with dogged determination. At 46, he had no outstanding sea victories to his credit, but he was known as one of the best, as well as one of the luckiest officers in the fleet.
