Purified terephthalic acid (PTA) is mainly used to produce polyester (PET) resin and PET fiber.

1 Production technology

PTA is produced through the liquid-phase oxidization of p-xylene (PX) in acetic acid solution. Cobalt acetate is used as catalyst in the production. BP and Du Pont own the technical know-how. Mitsubishi Chemical, Eastman Chemical and Mitsui Chemical also have competitive processes.
