"It's amazing when I think I have spent more than half of my life in this band," said keyboard player Steve Schmidt. "There is still spontaneity. It is still an inspiring thing."

At 48, Schmidt is still the young turk in the Blue Wisp Big Band, a remarkable institution, unique not only to this town, but the world of jazz.

The band is celebrating its silver anniversary this month with a special performance Saturday at the Blue Wisp, which will be recorded for a live CD to be called "Silver Serenade."
