The need for non-fossil sources of energy, such as fusion, is determined in part by estimates of fossil fuel reserves. John Sheffield, Joint Institute for Energy and Environment, University of Tennessee, summarized current perspectives on fossil fuel reserves.

Fossil fuels include Coal, Lignite, Peat, Conventional Oil, Heavy Oil, Oil Sands and Shale Oil, Gas, and Natural Gas Liquids, and Methane Hydrates.
