Jan. 10--CHEROKEE, Iowa -- Vernon Ludwig left a good job installing home furnaces in 1965 for the promise of the slaughterhouse.

Ludwig raised eight children on wages from the Wilson & Co. plant. He bought a house and a boat. Twice-yearly raises allowed for frequent vacations.

"We were working hard, but we were making good money, too," he said. "Other people were jealous of our jobs."
