Jan. 9--One resident's trash is another company's fuel.

Literally.

All of York County's household garbage not diverted to the recycling bin is burned to generate electricity -- a process that reduces the need for acre-hungry landfills, and supplies enough electricity to the PJM Interconnection grid to power 6,000 homes.

Based in Valley Forge, PJM Interconnection controls a series of power grids also fueled by natural gas, oil, nuclear power and coal.

All of York County's power flows through the PJM power grid.
