The US Agricultural Research Service is conducting research on PBAN neuropeptides and pheromonostatic peptide (PSP) insect proteins to control sex drives in corn earworm females. The female only lays eggs when she senses there are plants nearby as a food source for her offspring. The corn earworm damages approximately $1.2 billion in crops every year. Male earworms pass sperm and PSP to females during mating, and PSP cause females to lose interest in sex until after eggs are laid. Transmitting the PSP to the females to block the brain protein used in luring mates will prevent the offspring ...
