In the fall of 1797, as Samuel Taylor Coleridge was writing "The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere," (1) he found himself reflecting on the influence of his childhood reading, recalling how, from the age of three, he "read incessantly," and, by the age of six, had become obsessed with stories of the unknown, from Robinson Crusoe to the Arabian Nights' Entertainments. (2) This childhood reading was not, however, without its ill effects.
