Introduction

During the 1980s, a huge outcry emerged about the decline of American education and the danger it posed for American society. The same outcry continues today accompanied by a demand that high, testable, national standards be adopted and that failing schools be closed or subject to competition from private secular or religious schools, or less regulated, nonunionized public schools. The current conservative reform movement (composed of an interesting alliance of know-it-all and know-nothing groups) is profoundly mistaken in its view of education and will fail ...
