The European Community's (EC) standards on packaging, spurred on by the example of Germany, are becoming stricter. Germany, seeking to protect the environment by reducing waste, has implemented the strictest packaging regulations in the world and other EC countries are expected to adopt similar legislation. The German laws require manufacturers, distributors, and retailers to collect waste. The only exception is merchandise bearing a 'Green Dot.' Green Dot products are made by manufacturers that pay fees dedicated to waste collection and recycling programs.
